Vero Beach is closer than it looks. Three airlines fly nonstop into the regional airport, ten minutes from the island, and Melbourne, Palm Beach and Orlando are an easy drive.
Living in Vero BeachSchedules change seasonally; routes below are as published by the airport and airlines in September 2026.
I-95 and the Intracoastal both run past the island.
Interstate 95 runs the length of the coast a few miles inland; the State Road 60 exit brings you east across the mainland and over the Merrill P. Barber Bridge to Ocean Drive in about fifteen minutes. From Palm Beach the drive is roughly an hour and a half; from Orlando, two hours; from Jacksonville, three and a half. Florida's Turnpike parallels I-95 further west and is the faster route from Orlando.
The Indian River Lagoon is the Intracoastal Waterway here, so the island communities are reachable by water from anywhere on the East Coast. The Vero Beach Municipal Marina, just north of the Barber Bridge, offers transient slips, moorings and fuel; John's Island, The Moorings and Grand Harbor each have private docks or marinas, and Sebastian Inlet to the north and Fort Pierce Inlet to the south are the ocean passes.
A car is a necessity; the island is long and A1A is its spine. Ocean Drive, Downtown and Royal Palm Pointe are the walkable pockets, and most club communities are designed around golf-cart and bicycle distances inside their gates.
