Orchid Island is a 600-acre ocean-to-river club community and its own town: 375 West Indies-style residences, an Arnold Palmer course, and a mile of private beach.
Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club occupies the Town of Orchid, a municipality of six hundred acres on the north barrier island that stretches from the Indian River Lagoon to the Atlantic. The town was incorporated in 1965 by seven residents to preserve the land's natural and agricultural character; when the property changed hands in 1987 it still had a population of seven and made national news as the second-smallest town in Florida.
Development began in 1988 with the Beach Club and the golf course, and the community was completed under Torwest, the company behind neighboring Windsor. Today it holds 375 residences and a member-owned equity club, and it remains a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
The Arnold Palmer course opened in 1991 with Palmer cutting the ribbon, and it is the centerpiece of the community: nine tee combinations from 4,321 to 7,126 yards, sculpted bunkers, water-guarded greens and a golf membership capped at 325 so the fairways stay uncrowded. It hosted the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur in 2018 and has been renovated twice by Arnold Palmer Design.
The Beach Club sits directly on the ocean with a pool, pool bar, dining rooms and the Seaside Lounge; the separate Golf Club holds Palmer's Pub and the main dining room. A Tennis & Wellness Center with eight Har-Tru courts and a spa, a yacht club and a gun club round out the amenities.
Every residence is West Indies in vocabulary: courtyard homes and golf cottages from roughly 2,700 square feet, estate homes on the course and the preserves, a select few on the river, and oceanfront condominiums north of the Beach Club along Beachside Drive. Prices run from under $2 million for cottages and condominiums to well above $8 million for oceanfront and estate homes.
Orchid Island sits north of John's Island and south of Windsor on A1A, beside the Wabasso Bridge. Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Historic Jungle Trail are next door, Disney's Vero Beach Resort is a few minutes north, and Ocean Drive is twenty minutes south.
